Thelma and Louise was directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by Callie Khouri and stars Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Brad Pitt in one of his first major feature film roles. The film tells the story of two best friends Thelma (Davis) and Louise (Sarandon) who decide to take a weekend trip together to get away from the tedium and stresses of their ordinary lives. Early on they meet with trouble in the form of an attempted rape of Thelma which is thwarted by Louise who, in a fit of deep rage, shoots and kills the attacker. Both women flee the scene, wrestling with the ramifications and justifiable doubts that the legal system will buy their side of the story. And so, they decide to make a run for Mexico, during which they encounter a host of characters, including Brad Pitt as a charismatic drifter and a state investigator played by Harvey Keitel. In the end, the women find themselves cornered with, as they see it, only one way out that feels like freedom. For its time, Thelma & Louise was a fresh approach to the traditional ‘buddy film’ and has become one of the most iconic references for strong female relationships in cinema. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for five more; Best Director, Best Actress for both Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Callie Khouri also won a Golden Globe for her screenplay and the film was nominated in three others; Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actress – again for both Sarandon and Davis.
